Swim Lessons

Curriculum, Skills and Classes

Swim-in Zone takes great care to place all students of any age into the class which provides the greatest potential for learning, satisfaction and fun. We certainly want to avoid the frustration caused by moving along too fast or introduce skills for which the student has no firm basis. The following description of classes and algorithm of placement into those classes offers the best chance of producing a happy and confident student with a solid set of skills onto which to build a lifetime of swimming competency.

Swim-in Zone puts AGE first, rather than ability. Our classes for age 3 to 1st grade are 30 minutes long regardless of ability, and those in 2nd grade and up are 45 minutes. The older children with the longer attention span will have plenty of time and the younger ones will be excited to be with children their own age.

When completing your registration form, use this model to help place your child or yourself into the proper class level. The staff may further adjust the class level, based on their evaluation of the student’s skill set.

Swim Lesson Policies and Parent Information

The instructors at Swim-in Zone will be touching and holding your child about the waist, chest, head, arms, legs and bottom. Other programs attach flotation devices to the child instead of hands on, but we want the children to gradually experience the buoyancy properties of water and how it can support them. Learning to swim is about trust- trust in your teacher, yourself and the water. Each part comes about over time; the first is trust in the teacher. The parent is usually the child's first teacher and the water helps to build a nice parent/child interaction. Then the parent sets the stage by permitting the teacher to interact with the child without interference and showing confidence in the teacher. At Swim-in Zone, our teachers earn a child's trust by being there for them, do what they say, not trick the children, help when asked and support them in the water as necessary.

Swim-in Zone requires that you or a designated responsible adult be present in our facility while your child is here.

bullet

Children should use the bathroom before the lesson starts. Our staff will not take children to the bathroom or supervise changing into or out of swim suits.

bullet

Parent/child lessons are available for children ages 6 months to 6+ years. The curriculum remains the same for group lessons with or without a parent. If you have any concerns about your child or the swim lessons, you are encouraged to sign up for parent/child classes.

bullet

Parents are not permitted on the deck. Parents whose children want them close should take a parent/child class with their children. Parents must watch and wait behind the windows. Please do not coach your child from the window.

bullet

Instructors must devote all their time and attention to their students. Parental questions or concerns will be answered with a call from the swim school coordinator or supervisor. Please leave your name, number and best time to call at the front desk.

bullet

Even the best instructors get sick or need to miss a class or two. Swim-in Zone instructors are trained and our lesson curriculum is streamlined ensuring the same techniques are used by all instructors to minimize disruption in the event an instructor is absent.

bullet

Classes with registrations of 50% or less may be cancelled or combined with other classes. Calls will be made about 2 weeks prior to the session start date if your child's class does not have 50% of allowable students registered. You may be asked to chose another class time.

Attire:

Swimmers must have their hair confidently secured or wear a bathing cap. SAFETY TIP: Always secure long hair as it can become tangled and trap the swimmer.

bullet

Swimmers who are not potty trained must wear a swimsuit diaper under their bathing suit.

bullet

Remove bandaids, gum and jewelry

bullet

Good goggles are strongly recommended. Please write name on goggles. Face masks with the nose enclosed prevent a swimmer from learning to exhale properly and are not permitted. Prescription goggles may be ordered at the front desk.

bullet

All children including babies must wear a swim suit not just a swim diaper. SAFETY TIP: Children should not learn that they can just take off their clothes and swim in a diaper or underwear because when they encounter a neighborhood pool they might just strip down and go in without their parent.

bullet

No water shoes in lessons as they cause drag

bullet

For lessons, children may not bring or wear floaties, swimmies, bubbles, float vests or lifejackets. For recreational swim, children may wear Coast Guard approved lifejackets.

Make up Policy

Swimmers who miss a lesson for whatever reason are given their choice of a family swim pass good for any family swim time or  a make-up lesson at our prescheduled make-up sessions.  We cannot disrupt a class in progress with the addition of a new student for just one class and as you can guess, hoping students into and out of classes creates a scheduling nightmare. It is the parents responsibility to make sure that the children attend the classes. There are no refunds or credits for missed classes, even if you cannot attend the make-up classes and do not want the family swim pass. We have a very generous make-up policy. Many other swim facilities only offer make-up classes if they cancel the class.

Swim-in Zone will offer  make-ups throughout the session. Please call for dates.  No questions will be asked about the missed class. All classes whether cancelled by Swim-in Zone or the client will be made-up on these days. Additional days may be added for weather cancellations if there is a particularly bad storm. Please call to reserve a time for our make-up days.

Private or Family lessons will be arranged individually, but only 2 lessons missed by the swimmer during a session may be rescheduled. If more than 2 private lessons are missed, then the swimmer must attend a make-up day. Individual instructors cannot reschedule private lessons because while they might know their own schedule, they do not know the pool schedule.

If a private with Penny, Sue or Dan swim lesson is missed because the swimmer was sick or away, we will make up 2 classes with either Penny, Dan or Sue. If either Penny, Sue or Dan are absent for your private lesson, we will reschedule this lesson.

Semiprivate lessons: if both students miss, then 2 lessons may be rescheduled at a convenient date and time for both swimmers families. If more than 2 lessons are missed the swimmers must attend a group make-up date. If only one child misses a semiprivate lesson, then that swimmer must attend a group make-up date or receive a family swim pass.

Flexible scheduling for swim team or parent/child allows them to attend another swim team practice or class in the event that one is missed.

Notification of weather related class cancellations will be recorded on the front page of our website as soon as we make a decision to close early, open late, delay classes or cancel class.

All make-up lessons must be completed by the end of the session in which the student was registered.
